Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to
a young person thinking of going on the stage is "Don't!" But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are small. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a repertory company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, looking after the furniture, publicity, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny. But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy, waiting for the chance of work with a better company, or perhaps in films or television.

Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and tedious training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his big car. He told the chauffeur to stop, and he got out to speak to the girl. He asked her if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and at first she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. Then an appointment was made for her to go to the studio the next day. The test was successful. They gave her elocution lessons and within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. Of course, she was given a more dramatic name, which is now world-famous. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!

1. Usually only students who ____are accepted.

A、have received good education

B、are hard-working

C、are talented and promising

D、are good-mannered

2. The reason why young people should be discouraged from becoming actors is that ().

A、actors are very determined people

B、the course at the drama school lasts two years

C、acting is very hard work

D、there are already too many actors

3."Then she got angry and said she would call the police". This sentence shows that ().

A、She totally disbelieved the proposal

B、The man acted with an ill purpose

C、The man forced her into his big car

D、She was a nervous woman

4. Why is an assistant stage manager's job difficult?()

A、Because he has to do everything

B、Because he has to work long hours every day

C、Because he will not be happy

D、Because he has to wait for another chance

5.The phrase "once in a blue moon" refers to ____.

A、once in a full moon

B、once for a while

C、once for a long time

D、once and for all

Although the practice of the old Roman religion disappeared many centuries ago, some tra
ces of the Roman gods are still present in our daily vocabulary. The names of the Roman sun god, Sol, and the moon goddess, Luna, are used frequently in our language The word solar describes anything pertaining to the sun, and lunar anything pertaining to the moon. For example, the sun and the planets circling it are called the solar system. The period of time in which the earth circles the sun once is a solar year. The moon takes one lunar month to circle the earth. A lunar year of twelve lunar months is eleven days shorter than a solar year. In some cases our language shows how these heavenly bodies affect us directly. A room or place for sunbathing is often called a solarium. We get our word parasol from the Italian word meaning " a guard against the sun." For many centuries it was believed that the moon affected people who were mentally ill. For this reason persons who were mentally ill were often referred to as lunatics.

1).The word lunatic originally meant___.

A、twelve lunar months

B、the home of the moon goddess

C、a person on whom the moon had a bad effect

D、a guard against the moon

2).Implied but not stated______.

A、A solar year lasts about 354 days

B、Sol was the Roman sun god

C、Our calendar is based on the movements of the moon

D、Mental illness really has nothing to do with the moon

3).In comparison with the solar year, the lunar year is__.

A、twice as long

B、the same length

C、shorter

D、a few days longer

4).A parasol is used to __.

A、measure solar time

B、protect us from the sun rays

C、protect us from the gods

D、view the sun during the day

5).The best title for this selection is:___.

A、The Gods of Rome

B、The Rhythm of the Universe

C、Ancient Beliefs

D、Gods in Our Words

Some children are backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mot
her is insensitive to the cues and signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to mop up(吸收) language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems, when children learn more readily. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at the right time, but the process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed.Linguists suggest that speech milestones are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ (Intelligence Quotient(智商. At twelve weeks a baby smiles and utters vowel-like sounds; at twelve months he can speak simple words and under- stand simple commands; at eighteen months he has a vocabulary of thirty to fifty words. At three he knows about 1000 words which he can put into sentences, and at four his language differs from that of his parents in style. rather than grammar.Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about man's brain, compared with that for the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a teddy-bear with the sound pattern "teddy-bear". And even more incredible(不可思议) is the young brain's ability to pick out an order in language from the hubbub(喧哗) of sound around him, to analyse, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in novel ways. But speech has to be triggered(触发), and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the cues and signals in the child's babbling, (咿咿呀呀) clinging, grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child's non-verbal cues is essential to the growth and development of language.

1.The reason some children are backward in speaking today is that ____.

A、they do not listen carefully to their mothers

B、their brains have to absorb too much language at once

C、their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speak

D、their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them

2.By "critical times" the author means ____.

A、difficult periods in the child's life

B、moments when the child becomes critical towards its mother

C、important stages in the child's development

D、times when mothers often neglect their children

3.Which of the following is NOT implied in the passage____.

A、The faculty of speech is inborn in man.

B、Children do not need to be encouraged to speak.

C、The child's brain is highly selective.

D、Most children learn their language in definite stages.

4.It the mother does not respond to her child's signals ____.

A、the child will never be able to speak properly

B、the child will stop giving out signals

C、the child will invent a language of its own

D、the child will make little effort to speak

5.Which of the following is true according to the passage____.

A、By the age of a year and a half the child's vocabulary is still under 100 words.

B、By the age of four children still make many grammatical mistakes.

C、The author does not believe that children select and analyse their language.

D、All children of high IQ start to speak early.
