[多选题]

After a day’s hard work, we need some sleep. During the sleep, the fatigue of the body

disappears and recuperation begins. The tired mind gathers new energy, and the memory improves.

Some adults require little sleep; others need eight to ten hours in every twenty-four hours. Infants sleep sixteen to eighteen hours daily, the amount gradually diminishing as they grow older. Young students may need twelve hours; university students may need ten. A worker with a physically demanding job may also need ten, whereas an executive working under pressure may manage on six to eight. Many famous people have little sleep. Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Edison and Charles Darwin apparently averaged only four to six hours a night.

Whatever your individual need, you can be sure that by the age of thirty you will have slept for a total more than twelve years. By the age you will also have developed a sleep routine: a favorite hour, a favorite position, and a rule you need to follow in order to rest comfortably.

Investigators have tried to find out how long a person can go without sleep. Several people have reached more than 115 hours nearly five days. Whatever the limit, it is absolute. Animals kept awake for from five to eight days have died of exhaustion. The limit for human beings is probably about a week.

A、sleep is important for good mental and physical health

D、sleep is relatively unimportant for human beings

(2).The amount of the sleep required may ___.

A、tire an individual mind

B、help infants grow older

C、apply pressure on an executive

D、that they didn’t sleep long

(3).If a person is not allowed to follow his own sleep routine, he will probably _____.

A、never fall sleep

B、not sleep well

C、lost his memory

D、begin to daydream

(4).The author implies that if human beings are kept awake for more than a week the result _____.

A、is hard to imagine

B、will probably be a mental breakdown

C、is difficult to describe

D、will probably be dead

(5).From the amount of sleep Napoleon, Edison, Darwin required, we can conclude ___.

A、 that they were famous

B、 that they were executives

C、 hat they were intelligent

D、 that they didn’t sleep long

Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to
a young person thinking of going on the stage is "Don't!" But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are small. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a repertory company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, looking after the furniture, publicity, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny. But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy, waiting for the chance of work with a better company, or perhaps in films or television.

Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and tedious training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his big car. He told the chauffeur to stop, and he got out to speak to the girl. He asked her if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and at first she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. Then an appointment was made for her to go to the studio the next day. The test was successful. They gave her elocution lessons and within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. Of course, she was given a more dramatic name, which is now world-famous. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!

1. Usually only students who ____are accepted.

A、have received good education

B、are hard-working

C、are talented and promising

D、are good-mannered

2. The reason why young people should be discouraged from becoming actors is that ().

A、actors are very determined people

B、the course at the drama school lasts two years

C、acting is very hard work

D、there are already too many actors

3."Then she got angry and said she would call the police". This sentence shows that ().

A、She totally disbelieved the proposal

B、The man acted with an ill purpose

C、The man forced her into his big car

D、She was a nervous woman

4. Why is an assistant stage manager's job difficult?()

A、Because he has to do everything

B、Because he has to work long hours every day

C、Because he will not be happy

D、Because he has to wait for another chance

5.The phrase "once in a blue moon" refers to ____.

A、once in a full moon

B、once for a while

C、once for a long time

D、once and for all

The Princess Disease

Have you ever heard of the princess disease? It is a terrible disease. __26__ It wastes away at one’s social life and people’s tolerance. People with this disease think they are better than everyone else, without a real reason.

Jin is a girl who suffers from this disease. __27__ She thinks she is better looking than her friends and most people she has met. It is, as far as she is concerned, a well-known fact that she dresses better, sings better, and dances better than most people in her school, too.

So is Jin justified in believing that she is better than everyone else? __28__ Of course, she thinks this is because the singing coach hates her, since the coach has bad skin and is jealous of her. She is good at sports, but she isn’t the strongest, fastest, or even the best at any of their school’s events. __29__ She, again thinks it was because of the "haters". After losing, she pretended she’d just run for fun and it was no big deal, but in fact it was a huge deal to her.

Jin definitely has the disease. The treatment is to stop being so mean and geta little modesty. __30__ She might even get rid of this disease if she tries hard enough.

It’s so true that this device has become an inseparable part of our day to day life, and we are addicted to it. We will start feeling restless if we do not look to our phone after a few minutes. We all need to connect and communicate in real world. We need to put this technology to good use and not become a slave. So what shall we do? It’s simple: the solution is called “digital break”. This means, when you return home from work, you simply turn off or mute all your digital devices for a few hours every day, or at least once in a while. What do you do then? John Preston lives in a flat in north London. He moved there after his wife died four
years ago to be close to his daughter’s family, and because his big detached house and garden were too much work for him as he got older. It’s easier in the flat because the letting agent does everything that needs doing. The agent has the not satisfied because the window frames need painted two years ago, but the painters didn’t do it very well, so they need doing again. John pays over £1,500 a year for service and maintenance, and he thinks that it’s not good enough because the flats look shabby and a lot of things need repairing.

His daughter June, and her husband, Pete, on the other hand, have to do everything themselves or find builders to do it. They live in a large semi-detached house further out from the center of London than John, but they are still near enough to see him often. They live in the suburbs with a nice garden when their children play. They moved there four years ago to have more space. The only drawback is that June’s husband has to commute into the centre of London every day, but, overall, they are happy with their decision. When they bought the house, a lot needed doing to it and still does. June says, “We have a list of things to do as long as your arm-the roof needs repairing and the chimney needs mending.
