CHICAGO (AP) On Jan. 1, an order went into effect requiring that every checked bag at
more than 400 of the nation's commercial airports be screened(扫描检查)for bombs and weapons.Sunday was expected to be the heaviest travel day since Jan. 1. Yet spot checks on Sunday at several of the nation's airports showed no major delays caused by the new security measures. At the international terminal for Northwest Airlines at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, passengers waited up to 30 minutes longer than usual. Their bags were sent through giant screening machines and workers tore open taped boxes and searched through their contents before closing them up again. Most travelers simply accepted stricter screening developed since the terrorist(恐怖分子)attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, before which only 5 percent of the roughly 2 million bags checked each day were screened for bombs. The U.S. government has put an additional 23,000 people into airports to carry out the new order.Sonny Salgatar, a 23-year-old college student flying home to San Diego from Chicago, was told by an airport officer after the first pass that one of his bags was "hot", meaning there was something he couldn't identify and he wanted to open the bag for an inspection. The "hot" item turned out to be Salgatar's clothing iron."Listen, anything they want to do for security is OK for me," Salgatar said.

D、There will be more and stricter security measures.

4.What was the attitude of Sonny Salgatar towards the security measure taken____

A、He was annoyed.

Rather than be burned to death in his blazing shell-torn Lancaster on a bombing raid o
ver Germany in 1944, Royal Air Force Gunnery Sergeant Nicholas Alkemade jumped from 18, 000 feet without a parachute (降落伞), calculating that this would be a quicker and less painful death.Unbelievably, he suffered only slight injuries. The last part of his 122-mile-per-hour fall was broken by the branches of young pine trees, thick springy undergrowth, and finally deep snow. "It was rather like bouncing on a trampoline, " he recalled.Sergeant Alkemade's experience is a dramatic rebuttal of the idea that people falling from great heights are dead before they hit the ground. Asphyxia, brought about by the speed of the fall, and heart failure through shock were thought to occur long before the final impact. The fallacy of this belief has been amply (充分地) demonstrated by free-fall parachutists who regularly drop several miles before opening their parachutes. In 1960 Capt. Joseph Kittinger jumped from a balloon in the United States and fell 16 miles before opening his parachute. He landed conscious and unhurt.

1.According to the passage, Nicholas Alkemade ____.

A、was a German officer during the Second World War

B、had often jumped from a height of about 18, 000 feet

C、was a British officer

D、calculated the height with a special instrument

2.Nicholas jumped out of his plane because ____.

A、he was a good parachutist

B、he would otherwise be burned to death

C、he wanted to become a hero

D、the Royal Air Force instructed him to do so

3.Nicholas's experience was ____.

A、only an experiment

B、just as he had expected it to be

C、something painful and quick

D、quite unimaginable

4.Which of the following in the passage was the name of Nicholas's plane? ____

A、Lancaster

B、Gunnery

C、Trampoline

D、Asphyxia

5.The passage tells us that Capt. Joseph Kittinger ____.

A、served as a pilot during the Second World War

B、did not believe that people would die if they jumped from a plane without parachutes

C、made a successful free-fall land from a balloon

D、often forgot to open his parachute when jumping from a plane

New measurements taken from sleeping people explain,at least in part, why dreams tend
to have such bizarre but vivid storylines. The findings deal a blow to the Freudian interpretation of dreams but leave open the possibility that some useful personal meaning can be extracted from them. The main purpose of dreams, however, the authors of the new study believe,is to test whether the brain has had enough sleep and,if so,to wake it up.The new results show that in sleep, the frontal lobes of the brain are shut down.In the absence of activity in these lobes, which integrate other information and make sense of the outside world, the sleeping brain's images are driven by its emotional centers. The content of these dreams may be vivid and gripping but lacks coherence. The new results are consistent with the theory that memories are consolidated during sleep. From the pattern of activity that was recorded,"it seems that memories already in the system are being read out and filed in terms of their emotional salience, with is an extremely interesting idea,"said Dr.J.Allan Hobson of Harvard Medical School. The new measurements were made by applying the technique known as PET scanning to sleeping subjects. The biologists focused on the two forms of sleep, known as slow-wave sleep and REM sleep.REM sleep,so named because of the rapid eyeball movements that occur then, takes palce about four times during the night and is the phase from which the most vivid dreams are recalled.

问题:Accoding to this study, the purpose of the dreams is to ()

A、test if the brain has had enough sleep

B、show the dreams bizarre but vivid storylines

C、prove the correctness of the Freudian interpretation of dreams

D、extract some useful personal meanings from the dreams
